The importance of having an open attitude towards failure is always stressed when talking about innovation, but there are not many opportunities to actually go deep into concrete experiences that didn’t go so well and the learning that was taken out of it. The approach of the session is to learn from concrete grassroot level experiences and how they incorporated failure as a trigger for improved impact for children.

On 20 November, UNICEF, the EU, Save the Children and Plan International organized a multi-stakeholder forum to mark the 25th anniversary of the CRC. The aim was to convene a three-hour seminar- inspired by the TED talks - inviting inspiring speakers (national experts, academics, CSO/NGO representatives, donors, United Nations, influential private sector representatives and thought leaders) to take stock of progress achieved, identify main challenges in realizing the rights of the child and focus on best ways to address these through innovative solutions.

On the 25th anniversary of the CRC, UNICEF UK’s Child Rights Partners programme convened an event on children’s rights in local government.
“Local authorities as child rights champions: transforming services, improving outcomes” explored the potential of a child rights-based approach as a tool for transforming policy and practice in public services. The Activate Talk marked the first anniversary of UNICEF UK’s innovative Child Rights Partners programme; speakers discussed innovative approaches for changing public services through a child rights lens to secure better outcomes for children and ensure children’s rights are promoted, respected and realised at the local level.

On November 20, UNICEF Haiti hosted an Activate talk to showcase progress made for children during the past 25 years, and to discuss how more can be done differently during the next 25 years.
Seven children and three Haitian child rights activists discussed what remains to be done to make the Convention of the rights of the child come true for every single girl and boy in Haiti: Doing more and using innovation to do better.

On November 5th, UNICEF Ghana hosted an Activate talk on “building virtual bridges for reaching the unreached”. In a country like Ghana, where the majority of the population lives in rural areas, citizens or service users often live miles away from the facilities that provide essential services, such as schools, health facilities, or town halls. The talk explored a number of innovative solutions that link citizens to service providers, empowering people through information and creating feedback loops between public & private service providers and their beneficiaries.

To kick off a series of global events on innovation, UNICEF held in Kampala, Uganda its first Activate Talk on February 18, 2014. The event featured innovations varying from mobile health to youth advocacy; and brought together experts working to improve the survival and well-being of the most marginalized and deprived children.
Thirty two Activate Talks took place in 2014 in countries around the world, focusing on innovation for children. The talks addressed a wide range of issues, from low-tech solutions to support abandoned children to the latest in wearable technology and its potential use in promoting child health.
